SUMMARY:Rethinking the 'English' in English-Language Poetics
DESCRIPTION:Dorothy Wang – Williams College (https://american-studies.williams.edu/profile/dwang/) \nTHIS IS AN IN-PERSON ONLY EVENT. \nAbstract\nIn this talk\, I will discuss some of the assumptions foundational to the study of English poetics and poetry and suggest possible ways to rethink current norms and practices in the teaching of poetry\, poetics\, and poetry-writing. \n ||  \nBiography\nDorothy Wang is Professor of American Studies at Williams College. Her Thinking Its Presence: Form\, Race\, and Subjectivity in Contemporary Asian American Poetry (Stanford UP\, 2013) won the Association for Asian American Studies' 2016 award for best book of literary criticism. The only national conference on race and creative writing is named after it and has been convened four times. She also conceived of and co-founded the Race and Poetry and Poetics in the UK (RAPAPUK) initiative. Her work has appeared in The Cambridge Companion to Twenty-First Century American Poetry\, The Cambridge History of Asian American Literature\, and The Boston Review\, among other places. \n  \nTHIS IS AN IN-PERSON ONLY EVENT.
