Her work has been shortlisted for a number of prizes\, including the Dylan Thomas Prize\, the Goldsmiths Prize\, and the James Tait Black Award. In 2018 the TLS named her among the twenty best British and Irish novelists working today. \n\nAbout Ki Kwok\nKi Kwok (郭梓祺) is a Hong Kong writer\, educator\, and columnist whose work bridges Chinese literature and Irish studies. He earned a BA in Chinese from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and an MPhil in Irish Writing from Trinity College Dublin\, where he studied Samuel Beckett’s political aesthetics. His works include Time Difference (2024)\, the award-winning Piling Up the Wind trilogy\, Untuned Songs (2020)\, and A Door (2022)\, and he recently co-founded Typhoonpress with Au Wah Yan. \n\nAbout Bloomsday & Beyond: Celebrating Ireland\, the Island of Writers\nEvery year on 16 June\, Ireland tips its hat\, often literally\, to one of our most iconic literary figures. SUMMARY:Open Call: Visionary Machines: Romanticism & Art/Tech Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Open Call: Visionary Machines: Romanticism & Art/Tech Exhibition\nWe would like to promote Visionary Machines\, an interdisciplinary public engagement project exploring the connections between Romanticism (a literary\, artistic\, and intellectual movement from the late 18th to the mid-19th century) and our contemporary moment. By showcasing the creative responses of students and artists\, we aim to foster a greater understanding of Romanticism’s relevance to present-day concerns around the relationship between humans and technology. \nWe invite students\, researchers\, artists\, technologists\, and interdisciplinary creatives to submit creative works exploring how key ideas from Romanticism (e.g. the sublime\, organic form\, original genius) can be reinterpreted or subverted through digital mediums to help us navigate the ethical\, psychological\, and aesthetic dimensions of our current technological moment. \nA one-day workshop will be additionally held on 18 July (Sat) to kick-off the open call with an introductory talk exploring the exhibition theme\, as well as tutorials on innovative creative tools (more information to follow). \n  \nVisionary Machines: Romanticism & Art/Tech Exhibition  \nExhibition Dates: 27–30 August 2026 \nVenue: HKU Arts Tech Lab \nAdmission: Free and open to the public \n  \nSubmission Guidelines  \nSubmissions may encompass a wide variety of media (e.g. illustration\, creative writing\, creative code\, etc.) provided they can be presented or documented as digital images (single or sequential\, max. 10 images) or as a video/audio file (max. 4 minutes). Two studies from one programme. This report presents two studies from one programme. here. The first was conducted with fifteen Myanmar migrant workers in Bangkok and Samut Sakhon\, whose knowledge of the tool had been gained informally. Reliance upon camera translation was heavy\, recognition errors followed from accent variation\, and privacy risk was largely unrecognised. Five concepts were derived and made into a training programme\, afterwards carried to Mae Sot and delivered to twenty Myanmar teaching assistants at migrant learning centres\, who translate for pupils\, parents and institutions. The finding shows participants having a decision-making process before translation\, trust conditional upon subject matter\, and privacy understood as a duty owed to others. Access to translation\, it may be argued\, is more readily obtained than awareness of what its use entails\, a burden that should not rest upon migrant users alone. \n  \nFor enquiries\, please feel free to email chm1@hku.hk or riich@hku.hk. DESCRIPTION:Andrew Ross – Associate Professor\, University of Canberra (https://www.canberra.edu.au/about-uc/faculties/education/staff/andrew-ross) \nTHIS IS AN IN-PERSON ONLY EVENT. \nAbstract\nThis talk examines an instance where digital fandom operates as a site of participatory meaning-making and collective intimacy through a discourse analysis of comments responding to the YouTube short based on Netflix’s K-Pop Demon Hunters titled Do NOT Interrupt Our Mukbang! Drawing on a corpus of nearly 1\,800 comments\, the study explores how fans collaboratively negotiate humour\, identity\, and cultural knowledge in response to a global popular culture phenomenon. Utilising the concepts of participatory culture\, parasocial interaction\, and interdiscursivity\, the analysis demonstrates how online fandoms blur boundaries between fiction and reality\, animated characters and real-world idols\, and entertainment and everyday life. \n ||  \nBiography\nAndrew Ross is an Associate Professor at the University of Canberra\, Australia. His research focuses on the use of (multimodal) critical discourse analysis in social media discourse. His work has appeared in Language & Communication\, New Media & Society\, Communication and Sport\, Poetics\, and World Englishes. His most recent books are Innovations and Challenges in Socia Media Discourse Analysis (2025\, Routledge – with Michele Zappavigna) and Understanding the Language of Virtual Interaction: Communities\, Knowledge and Authority (2025\, Cambridge University Press – with Antonio Reyes). SUMMARY:Waking into Newness of Life: Resurrection and Folly in A Midsummer Night's Dream
DESCRIPTION:Nicholas Luke – Associate Professor\, University of Hong Kong (https://english.hku.hk/people/Faculty/86/Professor_Nicholas_Luke) \nTHIS IS AN IN-PERSON ONLY EVENT. \nAbstract\nBottom\, the unwitting butt of a cruel\, fantastical fairy prank\, experiences a moment of transcendence that echoes some of the most famous scriptural words about the promises of the hereafter. This talk considers why Shakespeare takes up the key biblical text on the doctrine of resurrection\, Paul’s epistle to the Corinthians\, at this critical point of A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, and what this says about Shakespeare’s approach to imaginative power. It suggests that the mysterious resurrection envisaged by Paul informs both the preposterous change experienced by Bottom (with his ass’s head) and the perspectival shift the play prompts in its audience. The play’s references to both Paul and to Erasmus’s Praise of Folly help us to understand why it is the base and foolish Bottom that opens an imaginative gateway to newness of life. \n ||  \nBiography\nNicholas Luke is an Associate Professor in the School of English at HKU. His work includes Shakespearean Arrivals: The Birth of Character (Cambridge\, 2018)\, Shakespeare’s Political Sprit: Negative Theology and the Disruption of Power (Cambridge\, 2024)\, and papers in journals such as Modern Philology\, Shakespeare Survey\, Law and Literature\, and Literature and Theology. DESCRIPTION:Peter Kennedy – Adjunct Associate Professor\, University of Hong Kong (https://english.hku.hk/people/Affiliates/104/Dr_Peter_Kennedy) \nTHIS IS AN IN-PERSON ONLY EVENT. \nAbstract\nStoppard’s biographer\, Hermione Lee\, writes that he has been “typecast as a wit\, an apolitical entertainer”. I wish to take issue with this view. I will consider first his play Indian Ink (1995) and the politics/ethics of colonialism. Next\, I will look at his treatment of politics/ethics in the Soviet Union & Czechoslovakia in Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (1977)\, Professional Foul (1978)\, Doggs’ Hamlet\, Cahoot’s Macbeth (1979) and Rock N Roll (2006). Finally\, I will consider what he says about politics/ethics and the artist in Travesties (1974) and The Invention of Love (1997). \n ||  \nBiography\nDr. Peter Kennedy has taught in Hong Kong since 1988. At HKU\, he teaches C20th poetry\, C21st English poetry as well as a Ulysses course. He holds degrees from the universities of Bristol\, Sussex\, Wales\, Essex and Trinity College Dublin. His five books and his journal articles have been mainly concerned with adult learning and learning English through literature. He also writes poetry that has been published in HK\, Ireland\, the USA\, UK and Germany.
