SUMMARY:Plagues\, barricades and the shadow of Spain: An historical exploration of language choice and identity in Gibraltar
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Daniel Weston – The University of Hong Kong (https://english.hku.hk/people/Faculty/88/Dr_Daniel_Weston) \nAbstract\nThis talk will explore language use from a historical perspective in one of the few remaining British colonies: the Rock of Gibraltar. Located on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula\, Gibraltar has absorbed linguistic and cultural influences not just from the United Kingdom\, or neighbouring Spain\, but from a variety of places and peoples across the Mediterranean. We will see how British Gibraltar began its existence in the early 18th century as a melting pot of languages and peoples\, and how it developed into a territory whose citizens are bilingual in Spanish and English. Particular attention will be paid to the territory’s fractious relationship with Spain\, as well as the impact of specific historical events (plague\, sieges\, war) on local processes of identity formation and language choice. \n ||  \nBiography\nDaniel Weston read English Language and Literature at BA level at the University of Oxford\, and obtained his MPhil and PhD in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge. Prior to taking up a position at HKU\, he was employed at Birkbeck University of London\, Portsmouth University\, and\, latterly\, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). His research interests include bilingual pragmatics (code-switching)\, World Englishes (specifically English dialect development)\, and the discourse analysis of gatekeeping encounters. He has published in a variety of journals on these subject areas. He is currently collaborating with the University of Cambridge on a project examining the communicative effectiveness of the undergraduate admissions interview. DESCRIPTION:Gloria Dou – The University of Hong Kong (https://english.hku.hk/people/Research_Postgraduates) || Xuekun Liu – The University of Hong Kong (https://english.hku.hk/people/Research_Postgraduates) \nAbstract\nPride before profit: language policing on Carousell\, an online classified platform in Hong Kong \nMs. Gloria Dou  \nIn this talk\, I investigate the direct communication that takes place between sellers and buyers on Carousell\, an online classified platform in Hong Kong. Drawing upon digital ethnographic and discourse analytic methods\, I demonstrate how Carousellers contest and rework the language ideologies of Hong Kong by positioning themselves as Cantonese-speaking\, ‘legitimate’ holders of authenticity whilst othering those who are accused of being ‘inauthentic’ in their speech because they insist on typing in English or simplified Chinese in mediated transactions. Exploring the co-occurrence of pride and profit in the discourses of globalized new economy\, typically situated in the global-local nexus\, I discuss how this bottom-up approach adds to the current literature.  \nHomonationalist and homocolonialist discourses in Hong Kong’s anti-extradition protests: Online evaluations and representations of LGBT rights \nMr. Xuekun Liu  \nIn this talk\, I introduce one case study from my PhD research project where I examine how some protesters perceived LGBT rights during the 2019-2020 Hong Kong protest movement. Discourse analysis is deployed to scrutinize one discussion thread on the online forum LIHKG\, a thread mainly addressing the topic of an event announced as “protesting with you on Hong Kong tongzhi parade”. The analysis focuses on how participants in the discussion thread evaluate and represent the event\, LGBT rights\, and the dyads of supporters/opponents of the activity\, pro-democracy/pro-establishment Hong Kong citizens\, and Hong Kong/Mainland people. SUMMARY:‘The power of expression’: typography\, politics and place in late capitalist city branding
DESCRIPTION:Dr Johan Järlehed – University of Gothenburg\, Sweden (https://www.gu.se/en/about/find-staff/johanjarlehed) || Ms Maryam Fanni – University of Gothenburg\, Sweden (https://www.gu.se/en/about/find-staff/maryamfanni) \nAbstract\nIn this paper\, we are interested in how city fonts\, as part of place-making practices\, work to sustain social difference and cohesion\, and we examine the ideologies that resonate both in their graphic form and in the design and promotional discourses that surround them. How are these fonts\, and typographic forms in general linked to place? 'Place' is then seen as an eminently social construct\, linking and ascribing cultural\, historical and political qualities to a specific geographic locale (Warnaby & Medway 2013). We are particularly interested in the ways in which politics is conditioning and being articulated in discursively mediated processes of linking type to place. What ‘graphic ideologies’ (Spitzmüller 2015) are invested in the city fonts and in the discursive and material place-making that they are being engaged in? In order to pursue this aim and answer the questions\, we build on the increasing body of work in sociolinguistics\, social semiotics and critical (type) design studies that conceptualize typography as a social practice and semiotic technology closely linked to ideology. The paper focuses on two city fonts: TilburgsAns by Sander Neijnens and Ivo van Leeuwen (2016) and Dubai Font by a Monotype team led by Nadine Chahine (2017). The two fonts are different in a number of ways and illustrate the complexities of typographic place-making and branding.  \n ||  \nBiography\nJohan Järlehed is a researcher and teacher at the Department of Languages and Literatures at the University of Gothenburg\, Sweden. His research centres on the interaction of language\, images and space in processes of social change. Written charms could heal disease or protect people from harm\, often without being read or even seen. Instead\, they might be dissolved into water and drunk\, sealed and hung around a patient's neck\, inscribed on food and eaten\, or written directly onto the body. Drawing on a collection of more than a thousand medieval charms\, this talk explores words at their most powerful\, highlighting complex relationships between orality\, textual materiality\, and language.  \n ||  \nBiography\nKatherine Hindley is Assistant Professor of Medieval Literature in the Division of English at NTU Singapore. She holds degrees in Medieval Studies and English from Yale and the University of Oxford. Her current research project examines medical and protective uses of spoken and written charms in medieval England\, with a particular focus on language and materiality. DESCRIPTION:Dr Matthew C. Jones – Northeastern University\, USA (https://cssh.northeastern.edu/faculty/matthew-jones/) \n9am \nAbstract\nThe 1847 Reports of the Commissioners of Enquiry into the State of Education in Wales\, or the “Blue Books\,” declared that Wales was barbaric and backward\, and sufficiently so to warrant state intervention. The core of Wales’s inferior society was nurtured by the Welsh language\, which nurtured and perpetuated unhygienic behaviors\, poor motherhood practices\, and inveterate superstition. This despite mid-Victorian Wales witnessing high points of literacy and Nonconformist practice. Such phenomena urge us to ask: what are the effects on English readers of rhetorics that malign foreign cultures\, especially when those cultures cannot address the attacks’ falsities (66% of Wales was monoglot Welsh-speaking)? How can we consider these colonial practices in conjunction with contemporary state and popular Englishlanguage depictions of nineteenth-century Irish\, Indian\, Chinese\, and African life? And\, indeed\, how have such obscurations evolved into the neoliberal and Brexit eras? \n ||  \nBiography\nMatthew C. Jones is a Postdoctoral Teaching Associate at Northeastern University in Boston\, Massachusetts (USA)\, where he teaches writing seminars on twenty-first studenthood and citizenship. His research interests include Welsh literary and cultural histories\, religious studies\, and translation studies\, and these histories' influences on minority language rights and preservation today. DESCRIPTION:Professor Annabelle Mooney – University of Roehampton\, UK (https://pure.roehampton.ac.uk/portal/en/persons/annabelle-mooney) \nAbstract\nWhile it is often said that ‘money talks’\, money is not usually discussed in very human terms. This paper argues that with the help of linguistic analysis\, it is possible to think about money in a more human way. Human creativity\, both linguistically and semiotically\, has always been present in the world of money. From get-rich books and stories about gambling to everyday talk about money and attempts to reclaim it\, money depends – like language – on human trust\, community and relationships. Drawing on data from the Bank of England Museum\, the Mass Observation Archive\, ethnographic research and community currency initiatives\, I foreground the human communities and social relationships that money emerges from and depends on. \n ||  \nBiography\nAnnabelle Mooney is Professor of Language and Society at University of Roehampton\, London and Head of the School of Arts. DESCRIPTION:Professor Richard Bonfiglio – Sogang University\, South Korea (http://sc.sogang.ac.kr/rpbonfig/1412.html) \nWednesday \nAbstract\nPublished serially at the height of the Second Italian War of Independence\, A Tale of Two Cities invents a French revolutionary past through an Italian political plot of unjust imprisonment and martyrdom. Charles Dickens places the figures of the prisoner and the martyr at the center of his historical novel\, opening with news of Dr. Manette’s release from an unjust eighteen-year imprisonment and ending with Sidney Carton’s sacrifice of his life during the Reign of Terror. Dickens frames the novel through the tale of Dr. Manette’s unjust imprisonment to motivate Carton’s martyrdom. This yoking of the figures of the prisoner and the martyr resembles the rhetorical strategies employed by Italian patriots like Giuseppe Mazzini to transform Italian social oppression and military failures into a form of political agency through the cultivation of Italian martyr cults. \n ||  \nBiography\nRichard Bonfiglio is Associate Professor of English Literature at Sogang University in Seoul\, South Korea. Yet it can also facilitate abusive behaviours against children\, including grooming for sexual abuse. Exactly how many children are affected is unknown. Nevertheless\, numerous surveys offer alarming national and global figures about the increased incidence of online child sexual grooming. Victims often struggle and / or fail to tell anyone because they feel ashamed or guilty; some children may not even realise that they are being sexually groomed online for some time\, given groomers’ manipulative communication. My research examines online child sexual grooming as an internet-enabled communicative process of entrapment in which an adult uses language and other semiotic modes (e.g. images) to lure a minor into sexual activities online and\, sometimes\, also offline. In this presentation I will discuss how linguistic analysis can help inform our knowledge of groomers’ manipulative language and\, working alongside other disciplines and stakeholders\, contribute to developing detection and prevention tools. I will refer to specific work undertaken by a multi-disciplinary project at Swansea University: the Developing Resistance against Online Grooming (DRaOG) Project. \nImportant: This presentation will contain data examples (language\, not images) that\, whilst selected carefully to avoid as much distress as possible\, some colleagues may find upsetting. Please feel free to take a break from and / or leave the webinar space at any point if that is the case.  \n ||  \nBiography\nNuria Lorenzo-Dus is Professor of Applied Linguistics at Swansea University\, where she also serves since 2013 as Director of the Developing Resistance against Online Grooming Project. Her research expertise lies in Digital Discourse Analysis. Relevant funded projects she leads include examining ideological grooming online by extreme right and jihadist groups\, profiling online sexual grooming language\, exploring constructions of trust in crypto-drug markets\, and analysing the language barrier to engagement in youth justice assessment interviews. Professor Lorenzo-Dus has held visiting professorships at universities in Europe\, the Americas and Oceania.
