SUMMARY:Literature and Complicity: Failures of Witnessing in Postwar Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Dr Ivan Stacy – Beijing Normal University \nSeminar Series\, 2019-2020 Second Semester \nAbstract\nIn this talk\, I will explore the relationship between literature and complicity in postwar fiction. I will begin by defining complicity\, and by describing the various forms that it can take. I will then outline what I see as the general relationship between narrative and complicity\, and the specific relationship between literary fiction and complicity: I suggest that narrative can be complicit with wrongdoing when it enacts or impels individuals into positions of culpable ignorance and connivance (i.e. looking the other way)\, and that literary fiction tends to draw attention and to critique such forms of complicity by thematising and embodying them within a reflexive textual framework.\nIn the second part of the talk\, I will examine three postwar writers form whom complicity is a central concern. Albert Camus’ The Plague and The Fall represent a shift from the notion of testimony as a form of resistance to a more troubled examination of failures of witnessing. The protagonists of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novels tend to obfuscate and elide the details of their own complicity with wrongdoing\, but both The Remains of the Day and When We Were Orphans invite us to read past these narrative failings to identify the narrators’ culpability. Finally\, Margaret Atwood’s dystopias in The Handmaid’s Tale and The MaddAddam trilogy represent situations in which non-complicity is simply not an option. For this reason\, she explores forms of compromise as a means of negotiating non-deal circumstances in which complicity with wrongdoing is unavoidable. \n ||  \nBiography\nIvan Stacy is associate professor in the School of Foreign Languages and Literature at Beijing Normal University. The main focus of his research is complicity in postwar fiction\, and he is also interested in the carnivalesque. He has published articles on these themes in the work of Kazuo Ishiguro\, W. G. Sebald and China Miéville\, and on the American television series The Wire. He co-edited (with Arin Keeble) The Wire and America’s Dark Corners\, and he is currently working on a monograph provisionally titled Literature and Complicity which is scheduled for publication with Lexington in 2020. He has taught in China\, Thailand\, the UK\, Bhutan\, Libya\, and South Korea.

Arguably the supreme example of these vanishing-edge illusions is to be found atop the Marina Bay Sands hotel in Singapore\, but Hong Kong evidently has its fair share of them. In this talk\, I develop a social semiotics of the infinity pool using a three-part analytic structure. I first demonstrate how the infinity pool is mediatized as a status marker which is thereby circulated and normalized. I then consider the semiotic and ideological ways these pools emerges as a mediated practice\, paying particular attention to their spatial and embodied logics. I then examine how the infinity pool is distinctively remediated in Instagram. In this regard\, digital media offer two very good opportunities for researchers: we find empirical evidence for the ubiquity of tourist practices and also for tourists’ reflexivity and ‘creativity’ – the ways they themselves take up and make sense of their practices. Ultimately\, my contention is that the infinity pool materializes a strategically\, euphorically (dis)ordered vision of space; this\, in turn\, tells us something important about both the social semiotics of privilege/inequality and the raw politics of contemporary power relations. \n ||  \nBiography\nCrispin Thurlow is Professor of Language and Communication in the Department of English at the University of Bern\, Switzerland. His publications include Elite Discourse: The Rhetorics of Status Privilege and Power (2018\, Routledge) and Digital Discourse: Language in the New Media (2011\, Oxford). SUMMARY:Sociolinguistics not-as-usual: lessons from Victor Klemperer
DESCRIPTION:Professor Monica Heller – University of Toronto (https://www.oise.utoronto.ca/sje/People/1615/Monica_Heller.html) \nAbstract\nA few years ago\, the University of Toronto Press approached me and Bonnie McElhinny with a proposal that we produce a new introductory text to linguistic anthropology and an accompanying reader. Faced with what we were experiencing as a disconnect between the role of language in contemporary makings of social difference and social inequality and the depoliticized tools we had been trained to use\, we produced something entirely different. The book we wrote (Heller and McElhinny 2017) was — is — an attempt to\, as Raymond Williams put it\, “walk backwards into the future” – to trace a genealogy of ideas about language and society that might help us grasp how and why approaches to that relationship got extracted from connections to material relations of power\, in order to learn how to practice a sociolinguistics that centres those connections. In this talk\, I will focus on one example: Victor Klemperer (1881-1960)\, a German philologist whose writings during the Nazi period have attracted increasing attention (Klemperer 1947\, 1998). I will use that example to ask why and how Klemperer used his philological approach to address the changes of his era; why his work was somewhat sidelined in the German Democratic Republic\, where he spent his last years; why we are interested now; and finally\, what we might learn from his story about practicing sociolinguistics in our own time. \n ||  \nBiography\nMonica Heller is a Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and the Department of Anthropology\, University of Toronto. She is a Past President of the American Anthropological Association and a member of the Royal Society of Canada. Professor Heller’s research focuses on the role of language in the construction of social difference and social inequality in the post-nationalist\, globalizing new economy\, with an ethnographic focus on francophone Canada. She is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Sociolinguistics\, and has published extensively in journals such as Language in Society\, Langage et société and Language Policy. Her most recent books include: Language\, Capitalism\, Colonialism: Towards a Critical History (2018\, University of Toronto Press\, with Bonnie McElhinny)\, and Critical Sociolinguistic Research: A Methods Manual (2018\, Routledge\, with Sari Pietikäinen and Joan Pujolar).

SUMMARY:Avoidance as Love: Evading Cavell on Dover Cliff
DESCRIPTION:Dr Nicholas Luke – The University of Hong Kong (https://englishhkuhk.foarts.hku.hk/people/Faculty/86/Dr%20Nicholas%20Luke) \nAbstract\nThis paper challenges one of the most influential readings of Shakespeare in the last half-century: that of the “ordinary language” philosopher Stanley Cavell.  It critiques Cavell’s notions of avoidance\, acknowledgment\, and recognition through an analysis of the discontinuous\, fragmentary character of Edgar (King Lear). On Dover Cliff\, Shakespeare brings us to a mode of theatre that works through seemingly negative movements of avoidance and evasion\, thereby throwing the parameters of ordinary language philosophy into confusion. Drawing on negative theology and work concerned with the phenomenology of theatre\, I make a case for the creative possibilities of avoidance in theatre and in love.  \n ||  \nBiography\nNicholas Luke is an Assistant Professor in the School of English at HKU.  Nick's work focuses on early modern literature\, how we receive it\, and why it still matters.  His first book\, Shakespearean Arrivals: The Birth of Character (Cambridge University Press\, 2018)\, argues that contemporary criticism fails to do justice to the ongoing power of Shakespeare’s tragic characters and seeks to re-establish the concept of character on new philosophical and theatrical foundations.  Nick’s current research re-examines the vexed question of Shakespeare’s engagement with religion through the theme of resurrection.

SUMMARY:Is Your Child Learning Singlish? Attitudes\, Exposure\, and Acquisition of Variation Among Local and Expatriate Children in Singapore
DESCRIPTION:Dr Rebecca Starr – National University of Singapore (http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/ell/People_Faculty_SRL.html) \nAbstract\nAlthough orientation towards local linguistic norms is increasing in Singapore\, Singapore English (SgE) is still perceived by some as a non-native variety. Variation in attitudes towards SgE may shape acquisition of SgE features by both Singaporean and expatriate children\, who increasingly attend government schools. The present study investigates how the -t/d deletion patterns of 60 children reflect their attitudes and school setting. Significant correlations are observed between deletion rate\, attitude towards SgE\, and accent self-perception among Singaporean children\, highlighting that this variety is undergoing endonormative stabilization. However\, while some expatriates in local schools delete more than peers in international schools\, expatriate children generally do not acquire local -t/d deletion rates or constraints\, regardless of familiarity with SgE or attitudes towards the variety. This gap between locals and expatriates reflects the persistence of ideologies that delegitimize SgE\, as well as the growing prominence of SgE as a marker of local identity. \n ||  \nBiography\nDr. Rebecca Starr is an assistant professor studying variation phenomena in English\, Mandarin\, Cantonese\, Japanese\, Korean\, and Irish Gaelic. She is primarily interested in the acquisition of sociolinguistic knowledge among children\, particularly those growing up in a bilingual environment. Currently she is leading the Voices of Children in Singapore project investigating how children here learn about language variation. Dr. Starr is also beginning work on the Singapore Multilingual Corpus\, which seeks to document the language use patterns of multilingual Singaporeans\, including documentation of Southern Chinese varieties such as Cantonese and Hokkien. She also studies teachers' stylistic variation in the classroom and sociolinguistic variation in the media\, as well as sociolinguistic variation in Singapore more generally.
