SUMMARY:Enacted Narratives
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Matias Martinez – Bergische Universität Wuppertal (https://www.ndlmm.uni-wuppertal.de/) \nAbstract\nIn recent years narratologists have become increasingly aware of ways of telling stories that do not correspond to a narrow definition of narrative. Diverse phenomena such as ballets\, games\, buildings\, gardens and lifes are now taken to tell stories. These ‚embodied‘ narratives challenge classical narratological concepts of narrator\, reader\, story etc. They force us to reconsider the nature of narrative and the scope of narratology. In my talk I discuss current definitions of narrative and propose a conceptual framework that encompasses traditional as well as embodied varieties of storytelling.  \n || \nBiography

SUMMARY:Transnational Adoption Literature: History\, Genre\, Representation
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Eli Park Sorensen – The Chinese University of Hong Kong (http://www.eng.cuhk.edu.hk/?page_id=1831) \nAbstract\nSince the Korean War (1950-1953)\, over half a million non-western children have been sent to western countries for transnational adoption — whereas there are very few examples of white children adopted to non-western countries by non-western populations. In my paper\, I will talk about the historical background of transnational adoption\, some of the political aspects involved\, and how this phenomen relates to the study of literature. I focus on Korean adoption\, primarily because the model of transnational adoption developed in the aftermath of the Korean War is unique: it represents the first real example of an institutionalized\, large-scale\, transnational adoption programme which subsequently has been and to some extent still is reproduced in other non-western countries. Furthermore\, I discuss autobiographical writing written by Korean-born adoptees — a corpus of texts that has emerged within the last three decades due to the fact that the generations of Korean children sent abroad during the sixties and seventies have now come of age — ready to speak for themselves\, to offer their own viewpoint\, in a public space that has typically been dominated by adoptive parents\, politicians\, journalists\, academics and social workers. \n || \nBiography\nEli Park Sorensen is assistant professor in Department of English at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He specializes in comparative literature\, postcolonial thought\, literary theory\, and cultural studies. He is the author of Postcolonial Studies and the Literary: Theory\, Interpretation and the Novel (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2010) and has published in journals such as NOVEL: A Forum on Fiction\, Journal of Narrative Theory\, Paragraph\, Modern Drama\, Research in African Literatures\, Partial Answers\, and Forum for Modern Language Studies.

SUMMARY:Writing as spectacle
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Adam Jaworski – School of English\, HKU (https://englishhkuhk.foarts.hku.hk/people/Faculty/48/Professor%20Adam%20Jaworski) \nAbstract\nThis talk is a preliminary\, work-in-progress inquiry into the idea of writing as ‘spectacle’. I will discuss several examples of large scale\, extravagant\, immersive writing in art and public signage exemplifying three approaches to spectacle: ‘consumerist representation’ (Guy Debord)\, ‘visual pleasure’ (Laura Mulvey) and ‘grotesque ritual’ (Mikhail Bakhtin). Some of the artists to be discussed in the talk include Fiona Banner (1966–)\, Alighiero Boetti (1940–1994)\, Ahmet Güneştekinin (1966–)\, Robert Indiana (1928–)\, Roman Opałka (1931–2011)\, Cy Twombly (1928–2011) and Xu Bing (1955–). In conclusion\, I will reflect on how the scale\, repetition and materiality of spectacularization position writing somewhere between ‘an enigmatic projection of our own bodies’ (Barthes) and broader questions of signification and meaning-making. \n || \nBiography

SUMMARY:Radically usage-based diachronic construction grammar and the development of non-deontic be bound to
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Dirk Noël – School of English\, HKU (https://englishhkuhk.foarts.hku.hk/people/Faculty/83/Dr%20Dirk%20No%C3%ABl) \nAbstract\nEven when both use and cognition are incorporated in its theorizing about grammatical change\, research in the budding discipline of diachronic construction grammar which explicitly subscribes to a “usage-based” approach does not always distinguish between abstraction from the observed usage of a linguistic community and individual linguistic knowledge. Given that language change starts with innovations by individuals and that experientially constructed knowledge is necessarily diverse\, such a distinction crucially needs to be made to arrive at a realistic usage-based account of grammatical change. This paper first assesses the extent to which the conflicting models of Elizabeth Traugott and Olga Fischer succeed in teasing apart internal and external systems\, concluding that while the former’s reanalysis model results from an external semasiological perspective\, the latter’s analogy model is more radically usage-based in that it does not inherently entangle intra- and extra-individual knowledge. By way of an illustration of a radically usage-based approach\, the second part of the paper proposes an onomasiological account of how the pattern be bound to came to be used as a non-deontic/epistemic necessity marker\, offering an alternative to viewing it as a development from the historically prior deontic be bound to construction. \n || \nBiography
