SUMMARY:Resurrection and Risorgimento: Giuseppe Mazzini and the Cult of Martyrdom in A Tale of Two Cities
DESCRIPTION:Professor Richard Bonfiglio – Sogang University\, South Korea (http://sc.sogang.ac.kr/rpbonfig/1412.html) \nWednesday \nAbstract\nPublished serially at the height of the Second Italian War of Independence\, A Tale of Two Cities invents a French revolutionary past through an Italian political plot of unjust imprisonment and martyrdom. Charles Dickens places the figures of the prisoner and the martyr at the center of his historical novel\, opening with news of Dr. Manette’s release from an unjust eighteen-year imprisonment and ending with Sidney Carton’s sacrifice of his life during the Reign of Terror. Dickens frames the novel through the tale of Dr. Manette’s unjust imprisonment to motivate Carton’s martyrdom. This yoking of the figures of the prisoner and the martyr resembles the rhetorical strategies employed by Italian patriots like Giuseppe Mazzini to transform Italian social oppression and military failures into a form of political agency through the cultivation of Italian martyr cults. \n ||  \nBiography\nRichard Bonfiglio is Associate Professor of English Literature at Sogang University in Seoul\, South Korea. He teaches Victorian literature and culture\, and his current research interests include cosmopolitanism\, travel\, masculinity\, and the Italian Risorgimento. SUMMARY:The Human Face of Money: the good\, the bad and the beautiful
DESCRIPTION:Professor Annabelle Mooney – University of Roehampton\, UK (https://pure.roehampton.ac.uk/portal/en/persons/annabelle-mooney) \nAbstract\nWhile it is often said that ‘money talks’\, money is not usually discussed in very human terms. This paper argues that with the help of linguistic analysis\, it is possible to think about money in a more human way. Human creativity\, both linguistically and semiotically\, has always been present in the world of money. From get-rich books and stories about gambling to everyday talk about money and attempts to reclaim it\, money depends – like language – on human trust\, community and relationships. Drawing on data from the Bank of England Museum\, the Mass Observation Archive\, ethnographic research and community currency initiatives\, I foreground the human communities and social relationships that money emerges from and depends on. \n ||  \nBiography\nAnnabelle Mooney is Professor of Language and Society at University of Roehampton\, London and Head of the School of Arts. SUMMARY:‘…no language at all’: Wales\, Welsh\, and British Imperialism\, Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Dr Matthew C. Jones – Northeastern University\, USA (https://cssh.northeastern.edu/faculty/matthew-jones/) \n9am \nAbstract\nThe 1847 Reports of the Commissioners of Enquiry into the State of Education in Wales\, or the “Blue Books\,” declared that Wales was barbaric and backward\, and sufficiently so to warrant state intervention. The core of Wales’s inferior society was nurtured by the Welsh language\, which nurtured and perpetuated unhygienic behaviors\, poor motherhood practices\, and inveterate superstition. This despite mid-Victorian Wales witnessing high points of literacy and Nonconformist practice. Such phenomena urge us to ask: what are the effects on English readers of rhetorics that malign foreign cultures\, especially when those cultures cannot address the attacks’ falsities (66% of Wales was monoglot Welsh-speaking)? How can we consider these colonial practices in conjunction with contemporary state and popular Englishlanguage depictions of nineteenth-century Irish\, Indian\, Chinese\, and African life? And\, indeed\, how have such obscurations evolved into the neoliberal and Brexit eras? \n ||  \nBiography\nMatthew C. Jones is a Postdoctoral Teaching Associate at Northeastern University in Boston\, Massachusetts (USA)\, where he teaches writing seminars on twenty-first studenthood and citizenship. His research interests include Welsh literary and cultural histories\, religious studies\, and translation studies\, and these histories' influences on minority language rights and preservation today.
