SUMMARY:“Destroyer of Worlds”: Oppenheimer and the Bomb
DESCRIPTION:Jason Harding – City University of Hong Kong (https://scholars.cityu.edu.hk/en/persons/jason-derrick-harding(da1b437f-65a2-46fb-ac30-530ffd398b3d).html) \nTHIS IS AN IN-PERSON ONLY EVENT. \nAbstract\nThis paper explores how the humanities shape our understanding of science and technology\, examining the example of the US physicist Robert Oppenheimer. It analyses how Oppenheimer raised questions about human values as a postwar public intellectual at a time when Cold War imperatives were driving scientists to develop weapons of mass destruction. The paper closes with a consideration of how novels and film – notably\, the recent biopic of Oppenheimer – frame imaginative and ethical reflections on the dilemma posed by Bertrand Russell: “Whether science will prove to have been a blessing or a curse to mankind\, is to my mind\, still a doubtful question.” \n ||  \nBiography\nJason Harding is Head of the Department of English at City University of Hong Kong. He arrived from Durham University\, where he had lectured since 2006 and was promoted to full Professor in 2017. He is the author or editor of seven books\, including a study of British literary journalism\, The Criterion (OUP 2002)\, The New Cambridge Companion to T. S. Eliot (CUP 2017) and he edited a volume in the award-winning The Complete Prose of T. S. Eliot (Faber 2015). He is currently completing the first full-length book on Encounter magazine for Princeton University Press. \nTHIS IS AN IN-PERSON ONLY EVENT.

DESCRIPTION:Andrew Barker – The University of Hong Kong (https://english.hku.hk/people/Affiliates/288/Dr_Andrew_Barker) \nTHIS IS AN IN-PERSON ONLY EVENT. \nAbstract\nThe English speaker approaching Eugene Onegin for the first time has over a dozen translations to choose from. In this talk I will argue that the chosen translation will have a huge impact on appreciation of the poem\, and that the stanza Pushkin created to tell his verse novel within has been drastically under-utilized in English poetry since the first completed metrical and rhymed translations were achieved. The talk is the work of a fan of the poem\, and an attempt to increase the work's popularity among poetry enthusiasts through an analysis of the delights of a consistent structure in the novel length poem. \n ||  \nBiography\nDr. Andrew Barker holds a PhD in American Literature\, an MA in Anglo/Irish Literature and a BA (Hons) in English Literature. He has taught over twenty different literature courses at Hong Kong University\, Lingnan University\, Baptist University and for HKU SPACE. His interests include the poetry of Yeats and Heaney\, twentieth-century American Literature\, the plays of Martin McDonagh\, the novels of David Mitchell and Zadie Smith\, and the films of Christopher Nolan. He also pays close attention to literature written in and on Hong Kong\, and is a widely-published poet.
